Brussels, April 29 (LaPresse) – “I don’t copy models, I fight for my people. But I admire leaders who put their nation first and refuse to bow to unelected elites. I believe in family, identity, borders, and fair economic policies. I also believe in dialogue, not extremism. In Washington, I met with officials and political leaders to discuss how to build a stronger conservative Europe that cooperates closely with the United States. The transatlantic bond is essential, now more than ever.”
This is what George Simion, MEP and presidential candidate of the nationalist AUR party in Romania's elections on May 4 and 18, told LaPresse. He is currently leading in the polls and was responding to questions about whether he wants to become “Romania’s Trump” and whether that’s the right path regarding migration, LGBT rights, relations with Russia, and protectionism.
“Giorgia Meloni has shown that being firm, patriotic, and pragmatic does not mean being isolated,” added the AUR leader and vice-president of the ECR party, which AUR has joined in the European Parliament. “Under her leadership, Italy defends its national interests while remaining a strong and respected voice within the EU and NATO. That’s the kind of balance I believe in,” he emphasized.
“We need sovereign states that cooperate within international structures without giving up the right to choose their own path. I have great respect for her leadership and for the example she has set for all conservative movements in Europe.”
