Spain: more than 90% of electricity restored

Barcelona (Spain), 29 Apr (LaPresse/AP) – Since before dawn, electricity has been gradually returning in Spain and Portugal. At 5 a.m. the Spanish electricity operator Red Eléctrica declared that more than 92 per cent of power demand had been restored. Authorities in both countries are working after the still unexplained blackout that halted flights, paralysed metro lines, disrupted mobile communications and closed ATMs. On Monday night many residents of cities, including Madrid, the capital, went to sleep in total darkness. Spanish rescuers claimed to have rescued some 35,000 stranded passengers along the railways and metro. As of 11pm yesterday, there were still 11 trains stuck due to the power outage and awaiting evacuation. Circulation is gradually returning to normal with train operator Renfe reporting that some of the main lines including Madrid-Barcelona and Valencia-Murcia-Alicante have been restored.
