Brussels, May 2 (LaPresse) – “The situation is getting worse. We live like in a gulag. Over 1,200 political prisoners are still in jail. Torture, censorship, religious persecution: all of this is still happening. I haven’t seen my husband for 5 years, and two years ago he simply disappeared. I don’t know if he’s alive. And there are hundreds of families in our situation. But all this repression doesn’t stop people, our hope is alive. Belarusians resist and prepare for a new surge, closely watching Ukraine because our fates are linked."

This is what the leader of the Belarusian opposition, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, told LaPresse about the current situation in Belarus.

She also urged the European Union not to forget Belarus: “We are Europe too. Support our movement, recognize our struggle, and help us keep the flame of freedom alive. Don’t give us to Putin as a consolation prize. A free Belarus means a stronger and safer Europe.”
