Brussels, May 8 (LaPresse) – The European Parliament has approved an amendment introducing greater flexibility on CO₂ emissions for new cars and vans. With 458 votes in favor, 101 against, and 14 abstentions, MEPs backed the European Commission’s proposal to support the European automotive industry, which is facing rapid technological changes and growing competition. The amendment allows car manufacturers to meet CO₂ emissions requirements for 2025, 2026, and 2027 based on the average emissions over the entire three-year period rather than annually. This would enable them to offset yearly excesses with better performance over the full term. Current rules set specific annual CO₂ reduction targets for each manufacturer, divided into five-year periods. Starting in 2025, a 15% annual emissions reduction target compared to 2021 levels will apply for the 2025–2029 period. To speed up adoption, Parliament chose to handle the proposal under the urgency procedure. The bill now requires formal approval from the Council, which adopted the same text on May 7, 2025.
