Tirana (Albania), May 11 (LaPresse/AP) – Polls are open in Albania from 7am to 7pm for the renewal of parliament. Around 3.7 million Albanian citizens are called to the polls to elect the 140 new deputies. The country heads to the polls with Socialist Prime Minister Edi Rama seeking a fourth term. Rama has promised EU membership by 2030. The election campaign was characterised by an intense rivalry with conservative Sali Berisha also on social media, despite the TikTok blockade. Voters abroad are participating in the elections for the first time. Key party themes include economic promises, such as higher wages and a tourism boom, and the fight against corruption. More than 2,000 candidates from 11 political groups are vying for 140 parliamentary seats. More than 570 international observers are present to ensure a fair and transparent election process.
