This was reported by the Wall Street Journal in an exclusive article citing three people familiar with the conversation. Trump's statement came after he spoke on the phone with Putin. The sources emphasise that this is confirmation of what European leaders have long believed about Putin, but that it was the first time they had heard it from Trump. This also contradicts what Trump has often said publicly, namely that he believes Putin sincerely wants peace, the Wall Street Journal points out.
