Thousands take to the streets in Madrid to defend public healthcare

Madrid (Spain), 25 May (LaPresse) – According to figures provided by the central government delegation in Madrid, at least 30,000 people demonstrated in the Spanish capital today to defend public healthcare and denounce the policies pursued by the regional government, led by Isabel Díaz Ayuso of the PP.
Under the slogan “Let's defend our public healthcare”, protesters filled the streets of the capital with white handkerchiefs in honour of healthcare workers. The demonstration, organised by the Vecinos y vecinas de los barrios y pueblos de la Comunidad de Madrid platform, began at 12 noon and ended in Plaza de Cibeles, where a manifesto was read referring to the “unsustainable” situation of public healthcare. “A healthcare system that belongs to all of us, but which the Popular Party government is dismantling to turn it into a private business,” the manifesto stated, as reported by the Spanish media. The protesters called for more money for public healthcare, health centres and hospitals with sufficient staff, paediatricians for all children, an end to waiting lists and good working conditions for professionals.
