Rome, 31 May (LaPresse) – The US special envoy for the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, has stated that Hamas' response to the ceasefire proposal in Gaza ‘is totally unacceptable and only takes us one step backwards’. ‘Hamas should accept the framework proposal we put forward as the basis for proximity talks, which we can begin immediately next week,’ Witkoff said in a post on X. ‘This,’ he stressed, ‘is the only way we can reach a 60-day ceasefire agreement in the coming days, in which half of the living hostages and half of the deceased will return home to their families, and in which we can have, in proximity talks, substantive and good-faith negotiations to try to achieve a permanent ceasefire.’
