Bellingham (Washington), May 31 (LaPresse) – Around 250 million honeybees flew away from a truck that overturned in the northwestern part of Washington State. The accident occurred at 4 a.m. near the Canadian border, close to Lynden, according to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office on social media.
It appears the driver had trouble navigating a sharp turn, causing the trailer — which was carrying about 70,000 pounds of beehives — to tip into a ditch, said county emergency services spokesperson Amy Cloud in an email. The driver was unharmed, she added.
Police officers, county public works employees, and several bee experts responded to the scene. The hives were later removed from the truck, and local beekeepers rushed to help recover them. The plan is to allow the bees to return to their hives and reunite with their queen within a day or two, with the goal of saving as many bees as possible.
