Rafah, (Gaza Strip) June 1 (LaPresse) – At least 21 people were killed today while heading to receive aid from an Israeli-backed foundation in the Gaza Strip, according to a hospital run by the Red Cross that received the bodies. Field hospital officials stated that another 175 people were injured, without specifying who opened fire. An Associated Press journalist saw dozens of people hospitalized. Witnesses reported that Israeli forces opened fire on people heading toward an aid distribution site. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military. The aid distribution by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has been marked by chaos, and several witnesses stated that Israeli troops fired on the crowd near distribution sites. The foundation did not immediately respond to a request for comment. In a previous statement, it said it had distributed 16 trucks of aid early Sunday morning “without incident.” It denied what it called “false reports of mass deaths, injuries, and chaos.”
