Milan, 1 June (LaPresse) – German Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz spoke today by telephone with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The conversation followed intense exchanges between the two governments in recent weeks. The Chancellor emphasised that Israel's security and right to exist are an integral part of Germany's raison d'état. He condemned Hamas' terrorism and called on it to release all hostages and lay down its arms. He expressed hope that an agreement on the release of the hostages and a ceasefire would be reached soon. At the same time, he emphasised the urgent need to provide sufficient humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip immediately and to ensure its safe distribution to the civilian population. The Federal Chancellor reiterated that the Federal Government continues to regard a negotiated two-state solution as the best opportunity for Israelis and Palestinians to live together in peace.
