Seoul (South Korea), June 3 (LaPresse/AP) – Millions of South Koreans are voting today (Tuesday, June 3) in an early presidential election, triggered by the ousting of President Yoon Suk Yeol, who now faces trial on rebellion charges after briefly imposing martial law last December.

Polling stations opened at 6:00 a.m. across 14,295 locations nationwide and will close at 8:00 p.m. Observers say a winner could be announced as early as midnight.

By 2:00 p.m., more than 13 million citizens had already cast their ballots. Including the 15 million who voted during the two-day early voting period last week, turnout has reached 65.5%. South Korea has 44.4 million eligible voters.

Pre-election polls showed liberal candidate Lee Jae-myung as the strong frontrunner, capitalizing on widespread public frustration with the conservative bloc following Yoon’s failed martial law attempt.

Conservative contender Kim Moon Soo has struggled to win over moderate and undecided voters, as his People Power Party remains mired in internal conflicts over how to assess Yoon’s actions.
