Dubai (United Arab Emirates), June 4 (LaPresse/AP) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has criticized the United States’ initial proposal in negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program, though he stopped short of entirely rejecting the idea of an agreement with Washington. Khamenei described the U.S. proposal as “100% contrary to the idea of ‘we can,’” referencing a slogan from the Iranian government and insisting that Tehran must maintain its uranium enrichment capability. “If we had 100 nuclear power plants without enrichment, they would be useless to us,” Khamenei stated. “Without enrichment, we would have to stretch out our hand begging the United States,” he added. The U.S. proposal reportedly included a demand that Iran completely halt uranium enrichment as one of its central elements.
