UN Council to vote today on Gaza ceasefire, possible US veto

New York (USA), June 4 (LaPresse/AP) – The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to vote today on a resolution calling for "an immediate, unconditional, and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, respected by all parties." The meeting is set to begin at 4 p.m. local time (10 p.m. in Italy). However, diplomatic sources indicate that the United States is likely to veto the resolution. The draft resolution, prepared by the 10 elected members of the UN Council with two-year mandates, also reiterates the call for the release of all hostages held by Hamas and other groups following the surprise attack in southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Additionally, describing the humanitarian situation in Gaza as "catastrophic," the resolution calls for “the immediate and unconditional lifting of all restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza and its safe and unimpeded distribution on a large scale, including by the United Nations and humanitarian partners.”
