Brussels, 5 June (LaPresse) – According to US Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth, many NATO countries seem to be on track to reach an agreement to invest 5% of GDP in defence spending. "The commitment is there. Five per cent for defence spending,‘ Hegseth told reporters at the NATO defence ministers' meeting in Brussels. ’When you consider the threats we face, the urgency in the world, it's critical. We don't need more flags. We need more combat formations. We don't need more conferences. We need more capabilities. Hard power," he stressed. On the other hand, some allies would not agree with the US request to invest 5% of their gross domestic product in defence – 3.5% for military spending in the strict sense and 1.5% for roads, bridges, airports and ports needed to deploy armies more quickly – when they have already struggled to bring their budgets to 2% of GDP.
