Iran, von der Leyen hears Netanyahu: ‘Urgent need for a negotiated solution’

Rome, 15 June (LaPresse) – European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, reiterating her concern about the situation in the Middle East, calling for a ‘negotiated solution’ to the crisis with Iran and reiterating the appeal for humanitarian aid to Gaza. ‘We are following developments in the Middle East with deep concern,’ von der Leyen wrote on X. "I reiterated our commitment to peace, stability and diplomatic efforts leading to de-escalation. In this context, I stressed that Israel has the right to defend itself. Iran is the main source of regional instability.‘ ’Europe has always been clear: Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon. A negotiated solution must be found urgently,‘ she stressed. Von der Leyen reiterated on X her ’strong concerns about Iran's nuclear and ballistic missile programmes – the same missiles that strike indiscriminately cities not only in Israel but also in Ukraine."
