Puerto Escondido (Mexico), June 19 (LaPresse) – The southern Pacific coast of Mexico is preparing for today’s expected impact from Category 4 Hurricane Erick, which has been classified as “extremely dangerous” by the United States National Hurricane Center. The powerful storm threatens to unleash destructive winds near the point where the hurricane’s eye will make landfall, sudden flooding, and a dangerous storm surge. The Miami center reported that Erick is about 110 kilometers southwest of Puerto Angel, Mexico, and about 145 kilometers southeast of Punta Maldonado, also in Mexico. The storm has sustained winds reaching 230 km/h and is moving northwest at a speed of 15 km/h. It is expected to hit the tourist town of Puerto Escondido, in the state of Oaxaca, and focus on a sparsely populated stretch of coast between the tourist areas of Oaxaca and Acapulco to the northwest. Last night, in a video message, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced that all activities in the region have been suspended and urged residents to stay in their homes or go to shelters if living in low-lying areas.
