Brussels, June 26 (LaPresse) – The motion of no confidence against the von der Leyen Commission, introduced yesterday by an MEP from the Romanian nationalist party AUR, has been officially submitted. The motion has now reached 74 signatures, equivalent to 10% of the members of the European Parliament. According to its proponents, the motion — which has little chance of success — could be voted on during the July plenary session. However, other EU sources suggest the text may be debated in the chamber as late as September.

The initiative was launched by the nationalists of George Simion, a former presidential candidate in Romania, who criticise von der Leyen for a lack of transparency. The motion cites the recent Pfizergate ruling by the EU Court of Justice. The AUR MEP reproaches the President of the European Commission for not providing journalist Matina Stevis of The New York Times with documents relating to her dealings with Pfizer/BioNTech during the COVID-19 vaccine procurement process, nor the messages exchanged between von der Leyen and Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla.

“Given the rulings of the Court of Justice of the European Union on May 25, 2025, in the cases Stevis – The New York Times v. Commission, which clarified that the Commission’s transparency obligations are fundamental and that refusals to disclose documents must be strictly justified by overriding reasons,” the motion of censure reads.
