Karachi (Pakistan), 5 July (LaPresse/AP) – The death toll from the collapse of a multi-storey residential building in southern Pakistan has risen to 16 as search operations for survivors continued for a second day. Rescue workers pulled 10 more bodies from the rubble during a night-time operation, local officials said. The government-run Civil Hospital said in a statement that it had received 16 bodies, adding that many of the injured had been taken to hospital. Rescue workers are using heavy machinery to search for at least eight more survivors believed to be trapped under the rubble. Residents said the building was located on a narrow street, hampering efforts to bring in more heavy machinery. Television footage showed rescuers removing rubble as relatives of those still trapped cried and prayed for the safety of their loved ones.
