Louisville (Kentucky), 22 July. (LaPresse/AP) – A federal judge has sentenced a former Kentucky police officer to nearly three years in prison for excessive use of force during the 2020 raid that led to the death of African American Breonna Taylor, rejecting the US Department of Justice's recommendation that no prison sentence be imposed on the defendant. Brett Hankison, who fired 10 shots during the raid without hitting anyone, was the only officer at the scene to be charged in connection with the woman's death. He is the first person to be sentenced to prison in a case that rocked the city of Louisville and sparked weeks of street protests against racial injustice and police brutality five years ago. District Judge Rebecca Grady Jennings handed down the sentence, saying that imposing a prison sentence ‘is not appropriate’ and adding that she was ‘distraught’ that more people were not injured in the operation. Hankison was sentenced to 33 months in prison and three years of probation. However, he will not go to prison immediately. The Federal Bureau of Prisons will determine the timing and location of the start of his sentence.
