Tehran, July 23 (LaPresse) – European threats to reimpose sanctions could push Iran to withdraw from an international pact that limits the proliferation of nuclear weapons, one of the last tools left to safeguard the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program. This was stated by Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Kazem Gharibabadi, speaking to journalists about the countermeasures his country plans against possible new economic sanctions, ahead of a crucial meeting scheduled for Friday with the United Kingdom, France, and Germany. Talks between Iran and some of the states still adhering to the 2015 nuclear agreement — from which the United States withdrew during Donald Trump’s first term — will be held in Istanbul. The three European countries have raised the possibility of activating the so-called ‘snapback’ clause, which provides for the automatic reintroduction of sanctions against Iran if progress to limit its nuclear program is not made by August.
