Gaza, Starmer: ‘Recognition of the State of Palestine should be part of a broader plan’

Turin, 25 July. (LaPresse) – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has hinted that the British government will not recognise the Palestinian state in the near future. The statement comes after a meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron – who said that France will recognise the Palestinian state by the end of the year – and after more than 200 British MPs signed a letter calling on the government to do the same. Starmer, according to the BBC, said that he and his allies are “working on a path to peace in the region” and on “the concrete steps needed to turn the ceasefire, which is so desperately needed today, into a lasting peace”. The prime minister added that he was ‘unequivocal’ in his belief that ‘the recognition of a Palestinian state must be one of these steps’, but that this ‘must be part of a broader plan that ultimately leads to a two-state solution and lasting security for Palestinians and Israelis’. ‘This is the way to ensure that it is a most effective tool for improving the lives of those who suffer, which, of course, remains our ultimate goal,’ he added.
