Putrajaya (Malaysia), 28 July (LaPresse/AP) – ‘This is a first fundamental step towards easing tensions and restoring peace and security.’ This was stated by Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, announcing an immediate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia. Military and officials from both sides will also hold meetings to ease tensions at the border, he added. The foreign and defence ministers of Malaysia, Cambodia and Thailand have been tasked with ‘developing a detailed mechanism’ to implement and monitor the ceasefire in order to ensure lasting peace.
