Tel Aviv (Israel), July 29 (LaPresse/AP) – The main international authority on food crises, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), states that “the worst-case scenario of famine is currently unfolding in the Gaza Strip” and predicts “widespread death” without immediate intervention. The IPC issued the alert in an “advisory” or update that is not a formal declaration of famine. However, it says that recent developments, including the strict blockade imposed by Israel, have “drastically worsened” the situation. A formal declaration of famine, which is rare, requires data that has largely been impossible to collect due to lack of access to and movement within Gaza. The IPC has declared famine only a few times: in Somalia in 2011, in South Sudan in 2017 and 2020, and in parts of the western Darfur region of Sudan last year.
