Bangkok (Thailand), 2 August (LaPresse/AP) – Protesters gathered today in the Thai capital to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, currently suspended from office, and to support the armed forces following a violent border dispute with Cambodia that left more than 30 people dead and displaced more than 260,000. Gathered at the Victory Monument in Bangkok, despite high temperatures, many sang patriotic songs and listened to speeches denouncing Paetongtarn and her father, former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, as well as expressing their support for the army, which has always maintained substantial power in the Southeast Asian country. Police said there were about 2,000 protesters in the mid-afternoon, although more were expected to join as temperatures dropped.
