Seoul (South Korea), 6 August. (LaPresse/AP) – The wife of ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol appeared in court to be questioned by a special prosecutor as investigators expanded their probe into allegations of stock manipulation, corruption and interference in party appointments. The investigation into Kim Keon Hee is one of three separate inquiries launched by the new liberal government in Seoul against the presidency of Yoon, who was removed from office in April and re-arrested last month for briefly imposing martial law in December. The conservative's sudden and ill-planned power grab on 3 December came during a seemingly routine clash with liberals, whom he described as ‘anti-state’ forces abusing their legislative majority to obstruct his agenda. Some political opponents have questioned whether Yoon's actions were at least partly motivated by mounting allegations against his wife, which have damaged his approval ratings and provided political ammunition to his rivals. ‘I apologise for causing concern to the people, even though I am an insignificant person,’ Kim told reporters upon her arrival for questioning. She added that she would cooperate honestly with the investigation before leaving without answering specific questions about the allegations.
