Rome, 6 August (LaPresse) – Donald Trump's US administration is considering further sanctions on the Russian “shadow fleet” of oil tankers if Russian President Vladimir Putin does not agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine by Friday. This was revealed by the Financial Times, citing three informed sources. The British newspaper notes that blacklisting the fleet's ships would mark the first time the United States has imposed sanctions on Moscow since Trump returned to the White House in January. Russia, the FT notes, has used a shadow fleet of largely obsolete tankers to ship oil around the world in an attempt to circumvent Western restrictions imposed following its large-scale invasion of Ukraine. The proceeds from these exports have helped finance the conflict. The term “shadow fleet” refers to ships whose ownership is hidden and which avoid using the services of Western companies. It is difficult to apply sanctions against their owners, although measures targeting the ships themselves have recently proved effective.
