Rome, 7 August (LaPresse) – The Swiss government has decided to continue talks with the US on tariffs and has ruled out responding with countermeasures for the time being. “The Federal Council has taken note of the application of additional tariffs of 39% on Swiss products entering the United States” and “reiterates its firm commitment to continue discussions with the United States in order to reduce these tariffs as quickly as possible,” reads a statement issued by the executive at the end of the extraordinary meeting on tariffs. “The Federal Council continues to believe that trade tensions are not in Switzerland's interest” and “is not currently considering tariff countermeasures in response to the US tariff increases, as these would impose additional costs on the Swiss economy, in particular through higher prices for imports from the United States,” the statement said. Bern then reported that it “will continue to focus on diversifying trade relations with all international partners” and that “it will shortly initiate in-depth discussions on possible support measures for Swiss companies and will continue to assess the need for further economic policy actions.”
