USA: Death toll rises to two in explosion at US Steel plant in Pittsburgh

Clairton (Pennsylvania, United States), 12 August. (LaPresse/AP) – The death toll from yesterday's explosion at a US Steel plant south of Pittsburgh has risen to two. Ten other people were injured. The plant, Clairton Coke Works, is one of four major facilities in Pennsylvania owned by US Steel, an icon of the national steel industry and American industrialisation for over a century. The plant is located in Mon Valley, a region of the state synonymous with steel. Allegheny County emergency services reported that the fire at the plant broke out at around 10.50 a.m. (local time) yesterday. The explosion, followed by several smaller blasts, caused a cloud of black smoke to spiral into the air. The CEO has promised to find out what caused the explosion, while union representatives have said their representatives will work to ensure a thorough investigation.
