The US president, the first to step off the presidential plane, waited for the Russian leader, applauding as he approached the red carpet where the greetings were to take place. US military aircraft guarding the meeting venue were visible and audible in the sky above, and Putin paused briefly to observe them. The two leaders did not respond to questions from journalists as they posed for the customary photo. They then boarded their respective presidential cars to reach the building that will host the summit.
