Milan, 16 August. (LaPresse) – If Trump's intention to reach a comprehensive peace agreement ‘is successful, it will be worth more than a ceasefire.’ This was stated by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in an interview with ZDF, adding that the results of the summit between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska were ‘much more significant than what we saw at the press conference.’ Merz's statement refers to the fact that, while Trump had insisted on the goal of reaching a ceasefire before the Anchorage meeting, in a post published after the summit he changed his position sharply, stating that ‘it has been established by all that the best way to end the terrible war between Russia and Ukraine is to reach a direct peace agreement that would end the conflict, and not a simple ceasefire agreement, which is often not respected.’ This position is close to that of Putin, who has always maintained that he wants a resolution to the conflict by removing what he calls its root causes.
