Ukraine: NYT, Trump to speak with Zelensky on Monday about possible transfer of territories

Milan, 16 August (LaPresse) – Following his meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, US President Donald Trump "told European leaders that he supports a plan to end the war in Ukraine by ceding unclaimed territories to Russia rather than seeking a ceasefire. This is according to two European officials who were informed of the phone call, quoted by the New York Times, who added that Trump will discuss the plan on Monday at the White House with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and European leaders are invited to attend. After the summit with Putin, Trump dropped his demand for an immediate ceasefire and believes that a quick peace treaty can be negotiated, provided that Zelensky agrees to cede the rest of the Donbass region to Russia, including areas not occupied by Russian troops, writes the New York Times, emphasising that Zelensky and European leaders strongly oppose such a concession of unoccupied territories, which also contain important defensive lines and are rich in minerals.
