São Paulo (Brazil), August 17 (LaPresse) – Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro temporarily left house arrest on Saturday to undergo medical examinations in Brasília, after a judge authorized him to spend six to eight hours in hospital. Doctors at DF Star Hospital reported that Bolsonaro was admitted due to fever, cough, persistent gastroesophageal reflux, and hiccups. Tests revealed residual signs of two recent lung infections, as well as ongoing esophagitis and gastritis. He was discharged the same day and will continue medication therapy.
Bolsonaro has been hospitalized several times since being stabbed during a campaign event before the 2018 presidential elections. His most recent surgery was in April for an intestinal obstruction. He is currently on trial at the Supreme Court for allegedly trying to remain in power after losing the 2022 election to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. A panel of five judges is expected to issue verdicts and sentences for five charges against him between September 2 and 12. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing.
The far-right leader has been under house arrest since August 5. Supreme Court judge Alexandre de Moraes, overseeing the case, stated Bolsonaro violated precautionary measures by spreading content through his three sons, all deputies.
A small group of fewer than 20 people gathered outside the hospital Saturday, claiming Bolsonaro is a victim of political persecution. Some thanked U.S. President Donald Trump, who called the charges a "witch hunt" and linked his decision to impose a 50% tariff on Brazilian imports to Bolsonaro’s legal troubles.
