Ukraine, Tajani: “A positive day, the Italian proposal was accepted”

Rome, August 19 (LaPresse) – “It was a positive day, another important piece in building the mosaic of peace. Above all, because everyone agreed on the principle of guaranteeing security to Ukraine, which strengthens Zelensky’s position in negotiations with Putin. Essentially, the Italian proposal was accepted: to ensure Ukraine’s independence through a mutual defense system in the event of an attack.”

This is what Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said in an interview with Il Giornale, commenting on the White House summit between U.S. President Donald Trump, European leaders, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“We are focusing on Kyiv’s security,” added Tajani, “which is our own security. Ukraine’s allies, including the U.S., must intervene in its defense if it is attacked. It would be positive if Putin said yes. Zelensky will negotiate on borders, but this support will give him strength when he meets Putin—and I hope that happens soon. We must continue on the path toward peace.”

Regarding the Trump-Putin bilateral in Alaska, Tajani explained: “Putin is not a winner. In three years, he has not achieved the conquest of Ukraine that he wanted in three days. We talk with him to seek a just peace—not one that humiliates Ukraine.”

The meeting in Anchorage is “a step forward; a dialogue has opened that made the bilateral in Washington possible. But the light is still at the end of a very long tunnel, and the Trump-Putin meeting is not decisive. The Ukrainian president cannot give in to all of the Russian’s demands.”
