Milan, 20 August (LaPresse) – Seven fires remain active today in the province of Ourense, with a total of over 67,500 hectares burned, after fire crews managed to stabilise the blaze that struck Vilardevós-Vilar de Cervos during the night. According to data provided by the Regional Department of Rural Environment, the fire in Larouco, the largest ever recorded in Galicia, remains at over 20,000 hectares burned a week after it started, although the figure is expected to change as “further measurements are pending”. This fire crossed the Sil River in several places and spread to the province of Lugo last weekend, affecting 10 municipalities. This was reported by the broadcaster Rtve. The fires in Chandrexa de Queixa and Vilariño (which have merged into a single fire and have burned 18,000 hectares) and Oímbra (4,000 hectares in smoke) are also still active. A fire that spread from the province of Zamora a few days ago, after starting in Porto de Sanabria, is also active. The Xunta (regional government) added it to its fire report only yesterday. Initially known as “A Veiga-A Ponte”, the Ministry of Agriculture has updated its name to “Carballeda de Valdeorras-Casaio” and estimates that it has burned over 20 hectares of Galician land. The fire affects the Galician part of Pena Trevinca, a natural area that is home to Teixadal de Casaio, the oldest forest in Galicia.
