Milan, August 21 (LaPresse) – Data from a classified Israeli military intelligence database indicates that 83% of people killed in Gaza are civilians, according to The Guardian, which published the findings of a joint investigation with +972 Magazine and Local Call.

As reported by these outlets, in May — 19 months into the war — Israeli intelligence officials had recorded 8,900 Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad fighters as killed or “likely killed.” At that time, Gaza’s health authorities reported a total of 53,000 Palestinians killed in Israeli attacks, a figure that includes both fighters and civilians.

“The combatants identified in the Israeli military intelligence database made up just 17% of the total, indicating that 83% of the deaths were civilians,” writes The Guardian, highlighting that “this civilian-to-combatant death ratio is extremely high for modern warfare — even when compared to conflicts known for indiscriminate killing, such as the civil wars in Syria and Sudan.”
