Seoul, Aug. 23 (LaPresse) – North Korea has accused the South Korean military of firing more than 10 warning shots earlier this week at North Korean soldiers engaged in a border reinforcement project, highlighting rising inter-Korean tensions amid an ongoing military exercise between Seoul and Washington, according to the KCNA news agency.

Subsequently, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed that warning shots were fired at North Korean soldiers who had briefly crossed the military demarcation line while conducting unspecified construction work. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon.

The South Korean military stated that the soldiers returned to North Korean territory without incident and that Pyongyang did not return fire.
