Turin, Aug. 26 (LaPresse) – Dozens of protesters are blocking Route 1 and Route 6, two of central Israel’s main highways, near the Daniel junction where the two roads meet, according to the Times of Israel. The blockades are part of a nationwide day of protest aimed at pressuring the government to negotiate a deal for the release of the 50 Israeli hostages held by Hamas in Gaza. According to Haaretz, the highways between Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other major cities are currently blocked in both directions, with demonstrators burning tires at three different points along the roads. On Route 6, protesters unfurled a huge banner reading: “End the war, bring everyone home.” The pro-hostage protests are taking place throughout the day, and earlier groups of demonstrators had already blocked key traffic arteries. In the evening, thousands of people are expected to gather in front of Tel Aviv’s Savidor railway station before marching to Hostages Square, calling for a deal to bring home all the hostages held by Hamas and to end the war in Gaza.
