Buenos Aires (Argentina), August 28 (LaPresse) – Some protesters threw stones at the convoy carrying Argentine President Javier Milei as his electoral caravan passed through Buenos Aires province, the stronghold of the country’s left-wing opposition movement. Milei was unharmed, his spokesperson said, but the attack on his procession interrupted the rally and heightened tensions just days before crucial provincial elections in Buenos Aires, where more than a third of Argentines live.
The incident comes amid a corruption scandal threatening to involve Milei’s close circle, including his sister and chief of staff, Karina Milei, who was in the pickup truck with the president and key candidates from their ruling party, Avanzada Libertaria, when stones, bottles, and other objects were thrown.
The protest took place in Lomas de Zamora, a historic Peronist stronghold — the opposition movement focused on workers’ rights that has dominated Argentine politics for the past eight decades.
Panic and confusion ensued as jubilant supporters and protesters crowded around Milei’s caravan, which took shelter inside the vehicle.
