Milan, 29 August (LaPresse) – The Iranian nuclear issue is at a critical crossroads, and the activation of the “snapback” mechanism for the reintroduction of sanctions is not constructive and would compromise the political and diplomatic process aimed at resolving the Iranian nuclear issue. This is according to Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun, after the so-called E3 group – comprising Germany, France and the United Kingdom – decided to activate the mechanism for reintroducing UN sanctions on Iran. This was reported by the Global Times. The spokesperson was responding to a question about the E3's notification to the UN Security Council to activate the “snapback” sanctions mechanism against Iran. Under Security Council Resolution 2231, the Council must decide within 30 days whether to activate the mechanism. China believes that any action taken by the UN Security Council at this stage should help facilitate the resumption of dialogue and negotiations, rather than creating new confrontations that could worsen or aggravate the situation, Guo Jiakun said. The Foreign Ministry spokesman added that Beijing will continue to maintain an objective and fair position, actively encouraging peace and promoting dialogue, and will play a constructive role in bringing the Iranian nuclear issue back on track for a diplomatic resolution in the near future.
