Washington (USA), August 30 (LaPresse) – A federal Court of Appeals has overturned President Donald Trump’s use of emergency powers granted by Congress to impose tariffs. One possible consequence is the reimbursement by the Administration of billions of dollars collected so far through these tariffs.

The ruling, passed by 7 votes to 4, raises doubts about the agreements Trump made with the European Union, Japan, South Korea, and other major trade partners to reduce "reciprocal" tariff rates on their imports compared to the levels originally set by the Administration in April.

The decision also threatens the tariffs Trump imposed on China, Canada, and Mexico to pressure those countries to do more to stop shipments of fentanyl and chemical precursors from entering the United States.

However, the ruling will not take effect before October 14, giving the Trump Administration time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
