Brussels, 2 September (LaPresse) – "Right now, the most important thing is to stay focused. There is an agenda: Gaza – and European governments prevented sanctions against the last Israeli government – tariffs. We will listen to the speech on the Union next week. What is important now is to do everything possible to bring the Parliament back to the centre to balance the Council, which is dominated by the nationalist right. This is what we are asking Ursula von der Leyen to do. If she is able to do so, fine, otherwise we will all have to draw our own conclusions and act accordingly, but now we are in the midst of a political battle, which Ursula von der Leyen would also do well to take into account'. This was stated by the head of the Democratic Party delegation, Nicola Zingaretti, at a press conference at the European Parliament in Brussels, responding to those who asked whether the European socialists were ready to vote on a motion of no confidence proposed by the Left. ‘There is a political fact: every time Ursula von der Leyen moves to the right, she loses votes,’ Zingaretti continued. "There were 401, then 370, and in July last year, 360 on the motion of no confidence promoted by a part of the AFD that was supposed to be the pillar to strengthen her. So I hope that Ursula von der Leyen will return to her role as President of the European Commission on the basis of the July 2024 platform, otherwise she will fail to fulfil the important role that the President of the Commission should have at this moment," he remarks. “I repeat: first 400, then 370 and finally 360, only seven votes in the majority in that famous vote on a motion that came from the far right, so I think she should seriously consider the risk of losing her majority in the Chamber,” concludes the former secretary of the PD.
