Tokyo, Sept. 7 (LaPresse) – Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has expressed his intention to resign following increasing demands from his party to take responsibility for the heavy defeat in the July parliamentary elections. This was reported by Japanese television. Ishiba, who took office in October, resisted for over a month the calls mainly from right-wing opponents within his own party. Ishiba’s move comes a day before his Liberal Democratic Party decides whether to call an early leadership election, which, if approved, would effectively be a vote of no confidence against him. In July, Ishiba’s ruling coalition failed to secure a majority in the 248-seat upper house in an important parliamentary election, further undermining the stability of his government.
