Rome, 8 September (LaPresse) – US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is confident that Donald Trump's hefty tariffs are likely to pass muster with the Supreme Court. However, he warned that the Treasury could be forced to refund hundreds of billions of dollars in tariff revenue if the court rules against the White House. Speaking on NBC's Meet the Press programme, the Treasury Secretary said he was ‘confident’ that Trump's trade moves would be upheld. However, he admitted that ‘we would have to refund about half of the tariffs, which would be terrible for the Treasury’ if the court overturned them. ‘If the court decides that, we would have to do it,’ he added. The legal battle concerns what Trump calls ‘reciprocal tariffs,’ applied to almost all countries as part of his ‘Liberation Day’ policy. The Federal Court has ruled that Trump overstepped his authority by imposing these measures. However, the ruling will not be handed down before 14 October, leaving the administration with a limited window of time to appeal.
