New York (USA), 11 September. (LaPresse/AP) – Americans are commemorating the 24th anniversary of the 11 September 2001 attacks with solemn ceremonies and other tributes in honour of the victims. Many of the relatives of the nearly 3,000 people killed will join dignitaries and politicians at commemorations on Thursday in New York, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. At Ground Zero in lower Manhattan, the names of the victims of the attack will be read aloud by their families during a ceremony attended by Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha. Moments of silence will mark the exact moments when the hijacked planes struck the iconic twin towers of the World Trade Centre, as well as the moment when the skyscrapers collapsed. At the Pentagon in Virginia, the 184 military and civilian personnel killed when hijackers crashed a commercial airliner into the US military headquarters will be honoured. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump will attend the ceremony. In a rural field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, a similar ceremony, featuring moments of silence, the reading of names and the laying of wreaths, will honour the victims of Flight 93, the hijacked plane that crashed after crew members and passengers attempted to storm the cockpit.
