Rome, 11 September (LaPresse) – ‘We are closely following the Global Sumud Flotilla affair. We will guarantee diplomatic and consular assistance to the 58 Italian citizens participating in the initiative, as we wanted to ensure together with the Prime Minister, as we have always done for Italian citizens detained in Israel for similar initiatives.’ This was stated by Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani during his briefing to the Senate on developments in international crises. ‘I have asked the Ministry's Crisis Unit to remain in close contact with the Italian spokesperson for the flotilla, and our embassy in Tel Aviv has been activated and, on my instructions, has made the Israeli authorities aware of the need to respect the rights of all our compatriots on the flotilla, including some members of parliament,’ Tajani added, revealing that he had called Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar ‘to personally raise his awareness of the issue.’
