Belgrade (Serbia), 13 September (LaPresse/AP) – Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic is stepping up his crackdown on protests that have rocked his populist government in recent months. What began as a small student campaign against corruption has turned into one of the most turbulent waves of protests in the Balkan country in the last twenty-five years. Human rights groups and Vucic's political opponents have warned against increasingly brutal tactics aimed at silencing a movement that has become the biggest challenge to his power. Last week, tanks rolled through the capital, Belgrade, in preparation for a military parade on 20 September. If the parade becomes a hotspot for unrest, protesters fear the army could remain on the streets. Vucic has ruled Serbia for over a decade and has faced accusations of corruption and authoritarianism.
