Milan, 22 September. (LaPresse) – Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa arrived in New York on Sunday to attend the United Nations General Assembly. He is the first Syrian president to do so in almost sixty years. The last time a Syrian head of state attended the General Assembly was in 1967. That was before the Assad family dynasty's 50-year rule, which came to an end in December when then-President Bashar Assad was ousted in a lightning rebel offensive led by al-Sharaa. Assad's fall also ended nearly 14 years of civil war. Al-Sharaa also met with members of the Syrian Jewish community in New York.
