Flotilla, EU: ‘Unacceptable use of force, we share activists' commitment’

Milan, 24 September (LaPresse) – ‘We take note of the Italian Defence Minister's statement regarding the attack on the flotilla. I want to repeat from this podium that freedom of navigation under international law must be respected. This is very important. Therefore, no attacks, no drone attacks, no seizures and no use of force against the flotilla is acceptable.’ This was stated by EU Commission spokeswoman Eva Hrncírová in response to a question about the attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla during the EU executive's daily briefing. "We respect the humanitarian commitment of the people on board the flotilla and understand that everyone has the right to engage in this activism. This is freedom of assembly and a central pillar of our democracy. We fully understand that the people on the flotilla, given the situation in Gaza, want to raise awareness, they want to show that the situation in Gaza is unsustainable, so we share their commitment, but we are also aware and concerned about the risks they are taking," the spokeswoman added.
