France, Sarkozy sentenced to five years in prison

Paris (France), 25 September (LaPresse/AP) – A Paris court has sentenced former French President Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison after finding him guilty on a key charge in his trial for alleged illegal financing of his election campaign by Muammar Gaddafi's government. Sarkozy was found guilty of criminal conspiracy in a plot dating from 2005 to 2007 to finance his campaign with funds from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favours. However, the court acquitted the former president of three other charges, including passive corruption, illegal campaign financing and concealment of embezzlement of public funds.
